چکیده

We present the results of our long-term monitoring of BD +53◦2790, the optical counterpart to the X-ray source 4U 2206+54. Unlike previous studies that classify the source as a Be/X-ray binary, we find that its optical and infrared properties differ from those of typical Be stars: the variability of the V/R ratio is not cyclical; there are variations in the shape and strength of the Hα emission line on timescales less than 1 day; and no correlation between the EW and the IR magnitudes or colors is seen. Our observations suggest that BD +53◦2790 is very likely a peculiar O9.5V star. In spite of exhaustive searches we cannot find any significant modulation in any emission line parameter or optical/infrared magnitudes. Spectroscopy of the source extending from the optical to the K-band confirms the peculiarity of the spectrum: not only are the He lines stronger than expected for an O9.5V star but also there is no clear pattern of variability. The possibility that BD +53◦2790 is an early-type analogue to He-strong stars (like θ Ori C) is discussed.

Very peculiar wind from BD + 53 ◦ 2790 , the optical counterpart to 4 U 2206 + 54

BD+532790, an O9.5Vp star, is the optical counterpart to the HMXRB 4U 2206+54. This system was classified initially as a BeX, but observational evidence soon stressed the need to revise this classification. The permanent asymmetry in the Hα line profiles (in contrast with the cyclic variations shown by Be stars), the variations in the profile of this line in time scales of hours (while time sca...

On the nature of the hard X - ray source 4 U 2206 + 54

The recent discovery of a ∼ 9.5d period in the X-ray lightcurve of the massive X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 has opened the possibility that it is a Be/X-ray binary with an unusually close orbit, which, together with its low intrinsic luminosity, suggests that the system is actually a Be + WD binary, in which a white dwarf accretes material from the dense circumstellar disc surrounding a classical Be...

A look with BeppoSAX at the low - luminosity Galactic X – ray source 4 U 2206 + 54

A pointed observation of the low-luminosity galactic source 4U 2206+54 was carried out in November 1998 with BeppoSAX. The light curve of 4U 2206+54 shows erratic variability on a timescale of ∼1 hour; neither hardness variations nor time periodicities are detected throughout this 67 ks long observation. Thanks to the wide spectral coverage capabilities of BeppoSAX we could observe the source X...

On the pointfree counterpart of the local definition of classical continuous maps

The familiar classical result that a continuous map from a space $X$ to a space $Y$ can be defined by giving continuous maps $varphi_U: U to Y$ on each member $U$ of an open cover ${mathfrak C}$ of $X$ such that $varphi_Umid U cap V = varphi_V mid U cap V$ for all $U,V in {mathfrak C}$ was recently shown to have an exact analogue in pointfree topology, and the same was done for the familiar cla...

repository of research publications and other research outputs

We present multiwavelength (optical, IR, radio) observations of CI Cam, the optical counterpart to the transient X-ray source XTE J0421+560. Pre-outburst quiescent observations reveal the presence of a dusty envelope around the system. Pronounced short term variability is observed at all wavebands from U–K, but no indication of prior flaring of a similar magnitude to the 1998 April outburst is ...
